Wyndham

On Wednesday the 27th May we left El Questro and drove to Wyndham and pulled into the Caravan Park there. Wyndham has been a great port town shipping cattle to Asian and Indonesian ports but that business has dropped off. Fortunately the port is going to be used again in a big way soon which is great for the town. There is a big boab tree in the park, as well as a donkey and a big croc in town. I am not enchanted by this ass like others are. It bit a woman who did not give it some carrot.

The history of the town is interesting and most of the original old buildings at the port town is still there. We went into the museum and enjoyed seeing and reading the history.

It is the most northern town in WA and is a great destination for fisherman, especially barramundi fisherman. Normally at this time of year, friends who we met on our first big trip in 2013, Lynn and Wal, would be here. They are keen (and successful) barra fishermen. They are running a couple of months late in getting up here. It would have been great for them to be here and show us around and help us catch a barra. Next time will do.

Being in a great fishing town we thought it was time to go out for a couple of fish dinners and take a bit of a break. We went to some good eaterys, ‘The Rusty Shed’ for lunch. We also went to the local club and had a great piece of fish. Very ordinary décor in the club but food was great.  The next day we went to the Five Rivers Café which won an award in the Lonely Planet magazine for some category, it was their ‘Barra Burger’. Linda had a ‘Barra Burger’and I had a barra and chips, just beautiful.  Should have got a photo.

That evening went to ‘The Bastion’, also known as the Fiver Rivers Lookout which is the lookout high above Wyndham.  It is an awesome panoramic view where five rivers converge into the Cambridge Gulf. The pano photos seem to be over exposed with sunset shots. It was so nice being up there as well as at least five degrees cooler. Wyndham is so hot.

So good we had to go the next night as well.

That morning we did have a go at fishing at the jetty. We had pork for dinner. There was a guy fishing near us who caught a good sized jewfish. This was our first go this trip at fishing. A bit rusty but we’ll get there.
