St Mary's Peak - Flinders Rangers

On Friday the 24th April we took on St Marys Peak. It is the highest peak in Wilpena Pound. We got some poor advice from the attendant at the information centre in Wilpena. He was an indigenous traditional owner of the area. So we had questions about what track to take so it would not be so grueling. This fellow had not done the walk as the indigenous people tend not to. That was not very helpful for someone manning the information desk. So we decided to take the shorter route thinking that would be better, however, it was the steepest and most rugged. The other way was a lot longer but was a gentle walk and was actually quicker. It was to much for Linda and so she waited behind up the mountain and Jan & Ross waited with her.

I had unfinished business with it as I did not get to do the walk the previous trip so I went to the top. Just spectacular.

The view into the pound at that point.

A view to the northern eastern part of the pound.

Views back out to the western part of the Flinders Ranges.

The next day we took a photo of St Mary's Peak from Stokes Lookout.

We made it back with bad weather coming in. It had been blowing a gale at the top of the peak and was very cold. We were lucky not to get a wet backside.  After that huge day it was time to reward ourselves with a beautiful camp oven roast dinner. Should have got a photo of the end result on the plate. A masterchef camp cooking contender.
