Iron Knob, EP

On Monday the 8th we left Wudinna and headed to Port Augusta. On the way we stopped in at Iron Knob which is about 70km short of our destination. Iron Knob is an iron ore mine that began operating around 1890. A town built up around it to provide staff quarters and services.

The mine closed down in the 1990s. The town has become a ghost town to a degree. A community exists there which is trying to thrive by running the visitors information centre and tours from there. We went on the tour, the cost of which was a donation. We also had a look in the museum which was free. We enjoyed the tour were glad to visit. The weight of the iron ore rock is incredible.

After the tour we had to take off as I had an appointment for the Landcruiser. It would not start when trying to leave Streaky Bay. So we got to the Motorhome Park at Port Augusta where we have stayed a couple of times before for $7 a night. Unhitched and went to Toyota to check the battery. The battery and alternator checked out fine but as it turned out that would not be then end of the trouble with it.

We put a roast on the baby webber q that night and had a beautiful roast lamb dinner. That night marked the end of our Eyre Peninsular experience which we thoroughly enjoyed.
