Sunday the 6th Sept we woke up to our magnificent
location in these ranges near Karijini. I doubt there is a more spectacular
free camp in existence. We drove into
Karijini National Park and set up camp at Dale’s Campground.
Some people have told us that the Karijini Gorges are the
best. We found that they are certainly the most spectacular. At Dale’s Gorge
there is the Circular Pool:
Fortescue Falls;
Fern Pool.
At the Oxer Lookout the four gorges, Weano, Hancock, Jofre
and Knox all meet at the Junction Pool. It is absolutely spectacular. There was
also a little colourful Top Notch Pidgeon hanging around.
We did the walk though Weano Gorge all the way to the
Handrail Pool. The rocks have become very smooth with the water constantly
travelling over them and the handrail is necessary for lowering yourself in and
pulling yourself out.
The same morning we also walked through Hancock Gorge to
Kermit’s Pool. Linda did well to make it all the way.
After a bite of lunch at the Day Use Area we observed the
beautiful hills and wildlowers that abounded.
We then visited the lookouts at Jofre and Knox Gorges
checked out the views:
Jofre Gorge;
Knox Gorge.
Next day we drove to Mount Bruce which overlooks the Mardoo
mine. Did not try for the summit. It is the second highest hill in WA.
That afternoon after another swim at Fortescus Falls in
Dales Gorge we were back at camp and who should drive by, Jude and Greg who we
became friends with at Broome and who had taken us to and picked us up from the
airport. So it was another enjoyable happy hour with them.
Next day we left Dales Campground and went to Tom Price and
into the van park. After a quick shop and lunch we went to Hammersley Gorge
which was a shorter trip from Tom Price than Dales but it is still in Karijini
National Park. It was a lovely water hole. At the first water hole from ground
level you can see a circular rock formation. That is what is referred to as the
Spa pool. I swam into that and it has a waterfall into it, awesome.
Karijini was spectacular. It did not disappoint. One of our
best things yet on this trip.
