Broome

Friday 17th July and we have arrived in our home for the next two weeks, Tarangau Caravan Park at Broome. We are just a walkable kilometre from Cable Beach which is pretty nice. A good place to get married and I’m sure it gets a workout for that stuff.

On Monday night we drove down on the beach for the sunset. There were hundreds of 4WDs on the beach. It is the done thing here to drive down and bring out your chairs and table, drinks and nibbles. We have been told from a few people that the camel ride is not so great so we were going to save our money for something else. It is more fun watching them go by and getting nice sunset photos with them silhouetted.

Linda is loving doing the rounds of all the shops and there are plenty of them. I am loving it that she is not making me go with her.

We visited the port which is a fully working port. Trucks coming in all the time to load the container ships.

On Wednesday we went to Matso’s Brewery for lunch. They are a small but growing boutique beer brewer. Nice beer and good steak sandwich.

After lunch we had a look in Bedord Park at the War Memorial and also at the plaques and information about the 1942 Japanese bombing of Broome, 88 lives lost and many more wounded.

Then we went out to Gantheaume Point which is the sight of dinosaur prints. There was plaster casts of the prints but we did not get to see the real ones as you can only see them at very low tides which we won’t get till 2nd August. At the lighthouse there sea eagles had built a huge nest and there was a large baby in it squawking. One of the parent sea eagles flew to the bottom rung of the lighthouse with a big gar fish. It had a feed and then flew up to feed the baby.

Then if that wasn’t enough about three whales appeared out at sea. To far away for photos. We were really priviledged to be spectators of it all.
